Signs Along the Writing Road
If there is one nugget of advice I typically share with aspiring writers, it is to pursue your passion. The only way to ever succeed at any pursuit is to be passionate, and the need becomes all the more imperative when it comes to writing. The pressures of the writing life are imposing at times and without passion it is all too easy to simply quit.
Unless you are one of the unlikely exceptions to the rule, it likely will take longer than you suspect to realize the dream of living off your writing. The fact is that it may never happen so don’t necessarily plan on quitting your day job yet. It is in the space between where you are and the place you are headed toward that passion sustains you.
To fuel your passion, fellowship with other writers, read voraciously, attend conferences, take classes, hone your craft, and otherwise feed your passion with creative stimuli that will remind you of why you live the writing life. The reward is as much in the pursuit as in a tangible symbol of success, whether fame, fortune or other fleeting sign.
