Signs Along the Writing Road
Back in the 80s, the air force sent our family to Turkey. We faced a lot of challenges while living overseas—not the least of which was driving. The driver—my husband—dodged trucks and horse-drawn wagons and motorcycles piled high with a family of five. The navigator—me—wondered if the map I was reading was upside-down or right-side up. Details in Turkish maps are sparse and, not surprisingly, in Turkish. When my husband asked, “Which way?” while avoiding a flock of bleating sheep, I replied, “How should I know? I can’t read Turkish!”
To get from here to there, you need a map. I’ve also found mile markers, interstate signs and—when the kids are threatening mutiny in the back seat—a Cracker Barrel restaurant billboard equally important.
Wouldn’t it be nice to find a few signs along the writing road? Maybe a “Proceed With Caution” or a “Rest Stop Ahead” sign. What about a billboard touting a worthwhile side-road or a shortcut?
I’ve asked other experienced writers what sign or billboard they would post along the writing road. Check back for their answers—and some specifics on “getting from here to there” wherever you are along the writing road.
